1 pm. sitting on the new pack patio, which still isn't much more than a slab. but we're working on changing that. two hawks circle above, and all four pups are stretched out on the cool grass, basking. helen has gone back to bed awhile, after a morning of mowing the yard with the huhduhduh. there is much to do today. trips to home depot, lowes, etc. cleaning of the old place.
oh but for now, everything is still. sparky is sleeping in her womb apartment. i've got yael naim on the ipod, and she's singing out the open windows. our street is lined with the cars of volunteers today, and i hear their constant hammers, two doors down, as they build the third habitat house in the neighborhood.
we're settling well into this new space. we're living out of so many boxes this week, but we are happy campers. the dogs stretch their legs nearly every day with romps in pastures and ponds and dirt roads. the cats are still shitting where they shouldn't, but they're adjusting.
yesterday evening, helen and i had a quiet night at home after a long week. dinner and a glass of wine and lots of snuggling and 30rock. and sarah harmer on the ipod as she cooked and i cleared the table. we sang along, and the cats blinked sleepily at us. the dogs dozed under the table.
oh but i should back up. earlier in the evening, helen and i were in the newly pet-free zone of our bedroom for awhile. the pets really don't mind the shut-out, as they have a whole floor to themselves. what luxury. anyway. when we came downstairs, the front door was wide open. moe and lucy were sat on the front porch, panting, and clem and charley were MIA. shit.
did i mention it was dark outside? and that there are pitbulls across the street behind us? pitbulls who are fond of chasing cars. they all walk with a limp.
and so we put on our shoes and drove around the hood, calling for our runaways. we scoured the fields with highbeams and turned up nothing. i nearly ran over one of the pitbulls, but that was the only dog we saw at all.
and of course, when we gave up and went home, there were the little shits, hanging out on our next door neighbors' porch. they seemed to be waiting for us to get home already and could they have some water please?
we're keeping the front door locked at all times anymore.
and such is life in the country for this little fambly, two weeks in.
